Abstract

The vocabulary of the IBM 7950 Computer includes a directly interpreted and executed set of data processing macroinstructions. Operations include file maintenance and searching, sorting, selection, and general tabular transformation. The use of these intrinsic subroutines yields faster operation and more direct programming. This paper describes a machine organization that facilitates data processing. Description of the macroinstruction set includes flow charts and comparison with conventional routines. The instructions represent a generalization of the use of control words. Limitations and possible extensions of such a command structure are examined.
