Abstract

This paper attempts to explain the difficulties of managing a growing EDP resource and why the manager must change his managerial style as the resource expands. The primary vehicle for this explanation will be a combination of role theory as developed by Kahn and Wolfe, Kahn et al., and others with the stage hypothesis of computer center growth as developed by Nolan. This combination will show that as the computer center grows, the role that the EDP manager plays in the organization will change, requiring an appropriate change in managerial style. The model serves to explain why there is high turnover in EDP management because of the EDP manager's inability to change his managerial style as his role changes.
