Abstract

The Fortran community has, over the past several years, devoted considerable effort to development of modern, effective repetition control structuring for Fortran. Some highlights of these efforts are reviewed here. Recently the American Fortran standards committee has tentatively adopted the basic elements of an extensible looping facility. This facility includes loop-bracketing key words, flexible loop control provisions, and a single-level loop exit statement. Criteria are proposed by which repetition structures may be evaluated. And an extension to the basic Fortran loop facility is described which is consistent with these criteria.
