Abstract

In our analysis of large elastic airplanes at The Boeing Company, we frequently encounter large systems of nth order differential equations. These systems are conveniently displayed in the form of “matric polynomials”. An investigation of the roots of the associated determinantal equation will give us information about the system such as damping, frequency of oscillations, and coupling of various components. In this paper we discuss some of the results of our investigation into methods of solving the determinantal equation. Because this is not a widely known subject, some definition of nomenclature is in order.
