Abstract

This paper presents an approach to machine requirements planning which employs simulation as an experimental tool to examine the effects on system performance of varying the number, type and operating characteristics of machines in a production system. A normative mathematical model is employed to guide the determination of variations in machine configurations and operating characteristics, and to identify a minimum cost production system design. An illustration is included to describe model construction and application.
