Despite the growing number of e-health websites thatare dedicated to health education and informationtherapy, healthcare provider organizations have beenslow in embarking on significant e-commerceventures to improve the delivery of healthcareservices to patients and consumers in geographicallydispersed communities. More specifically, hospitalsand health provider organizations tend to use staticwebsites that supply information, but have not mademajor investments in interactive technologies toengage patients and healthcare consumers moreactively. In this paper, we survey a number of keyparticipants in the e-health marketplace and thetechnologies that these players have employed todate. Not surprisingly, we found that opportunitiesabound to change the face of telemedicine and e-healthin terms of improving efficiencies, developingnew markets, reducing costs, and enhancing thequality and value of health services delivery.Evidently, today's Internet savvy consumers havebecome more informed as well as more demandingthan ever and the healthcare industry must respondin kind. We therefore conclude that the healthcareindustry faces significant challenges in closing thegaps of e-health services delivery to meet the desiresand needs of a growing population of sophisticatedhealthcare consumers.
