Abstract

Mobile information services will play an important rolein our future work and private life. Enabling mobility inurban and populous areas needs innovative tools andnovel techniques for individual traffic planning. However, though there already are navigation systems featuringroute planning, their usability is often difficult, becauseneither current information nor personal user preferencesare incorporated. We present a prototype of a traffic informationsystem offering advanced personalized routeplanning, including added services like traffic jam alertingby means of SMS. The fast changing nature of such datarequires to gather it from on-line Internet sources. Givencurrent bandwidth limitations an asynchronous updatestrategy of a central service database prepares the groundto meet real-time requirements though providing up-to-dateinformation. The top results of a personalized routeplanning query can be efficiently computed by our SR-Combinealgorithm in less than 3 seconds as practicalcase studies show. XSLT technology automatically convertsthese results for the delivery to various mobile devices. In summary we give evidence that by intelligentlyjoining latest technologies for preference modeling andpreference query evaluation advanced personalized mobiletraffic information systems are feasible today.
