Abstract

As wireless networks are increasingly deployed in theenterprise and other environments and such trends areexpected to intensify with the emergence of highperformance wireless networks, an important andemerging area of research is the dependability of wirelessnetworks. Although, the dependability problem also arisesin wireline counterparts, user mobility, location and linkdependence, and fault propagation make dependability achallenging task in wireless networks. The maincontribution of this paper is to propose a novel, multi-level,fault-tolerant design for the emerging wirelessnetworks. Extensive simulation results show thatincreased user mobility can be compensated by deployingmulti-level redundancy and the performance of wirelesslink is not critical in the overall availability as long as thelink availability stays above a certain threshold. Onemajor contribution of our work is to demonstrate thatoptimal dependability performance can only be achievedby fault-tolerance at network level.
