This paper studies the optimal placement of web files foren-route web caching. It is shown that existing placementpolicies are all solving restricted partial problems of the fileplacement problem, and therefore give only sub-optimal solutions.A dynamic programming algorithm of low complexitywhich computes the optimal solution is presented. Itis shown both analytically and experimentally that the file-placementsolution output by our algorithm outperforms existingen-route caching policies. The optimal placement ofweb files can be implemented with a reasonable level ofcache coordination and management overhead for en-routecaching; and importantly, it can be achieved with or withoutusing data prefetching.
