Abstract

This paper proposes a new receiver-based rate-adaptationprotocol for multicasting video, calledSplit-Layer Video Multicast (SPLIT). Unlike existingreceiver-based rate-adaptation protocols, such asReceiver-driven Layered Multicast (RLM), theSPLIT protocol is specifically designed to takeadvantage of existing packet loss concealmenttechniques to provide end-users with increasedquality of video. In an effort to gauge theperformance of the SPLIT protocol, a number ofexperiments using the NS-2 network simulatorwere conducted and the results were comparedwith those of the RLM protocol. The results showthat the proposed SPLIT protocol utilizes theavailable bandwidth in a more efficient way thanthe RLM protocol does.
