A distributed application that operates in an ad hoc networkformed by mobile nodes must limit its use of all-to-allcommunication since the overall capacity of such a networkis severely constrained. To address this problem, we describean algorithm that allows an application to impose ahierarchical structure on the participating nodes. A simpletree is maintained as hosts join and leave the ad hocnetwork. We evaluate this algorithm in the context of a collaborationtool for a network of Linux laptops using IEEE802.11b network cards. Preliminary performance resultsfrom our mobile test-bed indicate that the application respondswell to connectivity changes and is sufficiently agileto run in a highly mobile environment.
