This paper reports a systematic approach for detectingsoftware defects in multicast protocol implementations. We deploy a fault-oriented methodology and an integratedtest system targeting software robustness vulnerabilities. The primary method is to assess protocol implementationby non-traditional interface fault injection that simulatesnetwork attacks. The test system includes a novel packetdriving engine, a PDU generator based on StrengthenedBNF notation and a few auxiliary tools. We apply it to twomulticast protocols, IGMP and PIM-DM, and investigatetheir behaviors under active functional attacks. Our studyproves its effectiveness for promoting production of morereliable multicast software.
