Abstract

This talk begins with an examination ofserver-side architecture and workload trends. Severeperformance and availability gaps in server architecture, compounded by the growing cost and complexity ofdevelopment and deployment, are shown hampering thesuccessful adoption of web services. Two architecturalremedies are proposed: (I) unification of I/O and memory;and (II) whole system programming. The proposed Apsaraarchitecture for servers combines these new techniques withthe best of existing server architecture concepts. The talkconcludes with identification of key technical challenges andopportunities, and insights from early experiences inimplementing Apsara.
