We shall first try to define what is meant by a hybrid system. Petri nets are, by definition, discrete event systems. However, continuous Petri nets have subsequently been defined. Both models can be combined to produce what are known as hybrid Petri nets. These continuous and hybrid nets are used to model hybrid systems whether or not time is taken into account. These models are explained intuitively, and applications are described.
