Abstract

An XML/XPath query language that operates overXML documents and produces XML documents as resultsis introduced and illustrated. It provides a basis for viewdefinition, view integration, query processing, andoptimization. The XMark Benchmark for XML databasesis used to demonstrate the functionality and performanceof the prototyped implementation of the query languageand system. Results for query performance using ourobject-oriented database implementation and a relationalimplementation from the literature are compared.
