Abstract

IP multicast over the unidirectional satellite networkprovides a low cost solution that provides an effectiveone-to-many communication with wide area of coverage. However, IP multicast does not provide reliable datatransfer which makes it unsuitable for distributingsoftware or large amount of textual information over thenetwork. In this paper, we propose a reliable multicastprotocol which is designed specifically for unidirectionalsatellite link, called Reliable Multicast overUnidirectional Satellite Link (RMUS). In our design, wetake care of the characteristics of the unidirectionalsatellite link with long latency delays and often with highbandwidth on the downstream link but narrow returnpaths. RMUS provides error and congestion control to themulticast transmission. RMUS ensures data reliability byhaving the receivers detect packet loss and report that tothe sender. The sender collects data loss information anduses selective repeat algorithm to retransmit loss packets.RMUS minimizes the acknowledgement process in orderto keep the return path from congestion and also to keepsender away from ACK implosion. As for congestioncontrol, RMUS monitors the current condition of thenetwork and adjusts the transmission rate accordingly. The data rate adjustment is designed to effectively utilizethe available bandwidth without causing networkcongestion. Our experimental results show that RMUSprovides reliable multicast communication and effectivelyutilizes the available bandwidth as compared to otherflow control schemes.
