In this paper we formulate requirements for achieving flexibility and security for distributedpersistent objects. We argue for the separation of a user-view level from an implementation level and for the integration of capabilities for semantic protection. We describe a system based on these criteria which allows simple, secure programming of multimedia applications using Java objects distributed across the internet.
