Abstract

With the advent of cheap computing power and fast network interconnection, industry has seen the appearance of a heterogeneous distributed applications environment. This environment when scaled up has proven extremely expensive if not impossible to monitor and manage. The heterogeneous nature of this environment seems to call for a standardized solution. Modern standardized management solutions require management models describing the managed components in the environment. When dealing with very large environments with very diverse software, a generalized model of an applications environment would seem to offer the only scalable solution. This paper describes such a generalized object model of distributed software applications. This model has and is being experimented with at Bellcore for managing its distributed application systems.
