We present a sender-based message logging protocol for supporting fault tolerance with checkpointing and rollback recovery in distributed systems. Our scheme achieves the benefits of both optimistic and pessimistic message logging. Experimental results show that the maximum rollback induced by our protocol, and the number of messages logged, can be less than in optimistic receiver-based protocols, especially for programs that communicate frequently.
