Abstract

Spatial relationships have gained increasing attention in spatial database. Reasoning spatial relationships is very expensive since a large number of geometric computations are required. Especially reading and comparing information to reason directional and topological relationships could be repeated as they are processed separately in many of previous works. In order to avoid the repetition and improve the performance of reasoning these relationships, we propose a 2D+ string, which contains direction and topology information between spatial objects. We present a method to generate 2D+(2 dimensional plus)string and rules to reason directional and topological relationships. We show how these relationships are reasoned from 2D+ string. We then analyze the performance of reasoning these relationships using 2D+ string and other works for comparison purpose. The results show that the performance depends on the amount of information stored in 2D+ string and the amount of information in this work is less than that of previous works.
