The full power of mobile augmented and virtual realitysystems is realized when these systems are connected toone another, to immersive virtual environments, and to remoteinformation servers. Connections are usually madethrough wireless networks. However, wireless networkscannot guarantee connectivity and their bandwidth can behighly constrained. In this paper we present a robust event-baseddata distribution mechanism for mobile augmentedreality and virtual environments. It is based on replicateddatabases, pluggable networking protocols, and communicationchannels. We demonstrate the mechanism in the BattlefieldAugmented Reality System (BARS) situation awarenesssystem, which is composed of several mobile augmentedreality systems, immersive and desktop-based virtualreality systems, a 2D map-based multi-modal system, handheld PCs, and other sources of information.
