Abstract

The effectiveness of a replica selection strategy dependson its ability to take into account the metrics that reallycontribute to the improvement of the QoS perceived by theusers. These metrics depend mainly on the replicated applicationsemantics and on the host and network resourcesthat the clients own. This paper presents a replica selectionstrategy that adapts its criteria dynamically so as tosatisfy application providers' and clients' requirements, aggregatedinto an application binding contract and a clientbinding contract respectively. We also propose simple accessperformance heuristics which guide the default selectioncriteria when a binding contract is not required or isimpossible to evaluate. Our protocol also aims to achievescalability, by using the concept of logical domain, whichrepresents the reduced scope for replica selection.
