Abstract

We study attempts to dynamically update DNS recordsfor private (RFC1918) addresses, by analyzing the frequencyspectrum of updates observed at an authoritative name-server for these addresses. We developed a binary auto-correlation algorithm and discovered that updates come ininfinite series with periods of 60 or 75 minutes. We identifyboth periods as default settings of out-of-the-box MicrosoftWindows 2000 and XP DNS software. Identifying this common property of end-user environments helps to understandusers' behavior on the Internet. To our knowledge this isthe first study of the global impact of dynamic DNS.
