Abstract

The increasing mismatch between the low-bandwidth, resourcecharacteristics of wireless mobile devices and thehigh-bandwidth expectations of many content-rich servicesdrives the demand for deploying content-oriented servicesalong the data path between the end users and the contentservers. In this paper, we argue that the idea of extending existingcaching proxies to support these services is promising. This suggests extending the proxy caches for more than justtheir original intended purpose, that is the creation of an executionenvironment within them, which allows the executionof services locally and remotely. In this paper we describe the design, implementation andevaluation of a Service Execution Environment (SEE) in thecontext of the CONCA proxy cache. We also compare theperformance of Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP) andInternet Content Adaptation Protocol (ICAP) by using themas call-out protocols between SEE and the service providers.
