Abstract

Although some of the existing approaches forenhancing searching for information in an informationportal account for some aspects of users' behaviour in theportal, a more systematic treatment of this issue is needed, foremost the role of the content and the structure of aportal on the analysis of usage information. In this paper,we first present the analysis of the factors which theefficient searching depends on and based on it, we proposethe conceptual architecture of the management componentfor an information portal. We assume that the informationportal is built around a common taxonomy (in our case anontology), which is an emerging trend in knowledgemanagement applications we are particularly interesetedin. The management component ensures that searching forinformation will include all factors which determine therelevance of an information resource, enabling the top-rankingof the highly relevant information resources. Theapproach is mainly based on tracking users' interactionswith the portal. We have applied the approach in theinformation portal of our Institute and an evaluation studyis presented..
