In this paper, several issues related to designing a parallel disk system are discussed. Results of performance evaluation of several parallel disk organizations are presented. A characterization of the disk systems is also presented. Issues such as scalability, networking etc. are discussed. Several problems for future research on improving the I/O performance are pointed out.
