In this paper, an enhanced signalling and routing protocol for ATM extended banyan networks has been proposed A comparison of the performance measures obtained from the existing and modified protocol simulations indicate that the delays experienced by the cells in traversing the entire network have been decreased by a considerable amount. The proposed protocol considerably reduces the average cell delay and cell loss probability, which is evident from simulation results. The protocol has a very limited cost in term of the additional processing required in each switching element, and in terms of internal speed-up due to the exchange of signalling information between adjacent stages slot by slot. Further, it is possible to reduce the delays and complexity in extended banyan networks by adopting modified signalling and routing protocol, thereby obtaining an optimisation between cell loss probability and delays.
