Storage Area Networks (SANs) are becoming increasingly popular because of their transparency, flexibility, and easy maintainability. The second generation SANs have more features like virtualization. In this paper we propose the notion of active SANs in which the storage devices have computational power. We show how active SANs are useful in providing transparent MPEG-7 support for multimedia data.
