Abstract

The area of mobile communications has witnessed rapid advances and we are currently on the verge of a revolutionary advancement in wireless communications: the third generation (3G) of mobile communications. "Fourth Generation" (4G) of wireless communication systems, likely to appear after the successful deployment of 3G systems, is being frequently debated these days. This paper highlights different service architectures and lists various limitations of 2G, 2.5G and 3G cellular networks. This is followed by a description of key research challenges beyond 3G mobile communication systems. Some ideas are also given about how the extreme targets being set forth for systems beyond 3G could be achieved.
