An improved methodology is presented for the localization of tumors for radiation therapy treatment planning applications. The proposed approach focuses on the integration of MRI, CT, and PET imaging data towards the generation of a mathematically optimal tumor boundary. Fuzzy edges derived from CT and MRI are fused to form an integrated edge map which is employed in conjunction with a region based analysis of the PET scan to guide the evolution of a tumor segmenting model. The presented algorithm yields tumor contours which may be employed directly in the radiation therapy treatment planning process.
