To date developers can exploit a wealth of existinglanguages and tools when designing and implementingweb applications; however, comprehensive andautomated tools and techniques for producing theseapplications are still conspicuously lacking. Here wedescribe a framework for efficient production of webapplications, which synergistically integrates techniquesfor automatic code generation with some of the mostrecent technologies for web development, such as theJ2EE application server and XML. We also describe ageneral-purpose architecture for web applications andour Mockup-Driven Fast-prototyping Methodology(MODFM), which is based on well-tried techniques, suchas rapid prototyping and mockup-driven software design. Finally, we discuss an example of a web applicationdeveloped with our methodology, a comprehensiveuniversity administration system that was recentlydeployed at a research university. Our initial experiencewith this system indicates that MODFM and related toolscan provide dramatic improvements in developerproductivity, while also enhancing the reliability of theresulting applications.
