Abstract

In this paper, we propose a novel cluster-basedinfrastructure creation protocol, namely: Warning EnergyAware Clusterhead (WEAC). WEAC establishes adynamic wireless mobile infrastructure. As in all cluster-basedinfrastructure protocols, in the WEAC protocol, amobile node is elected from a set of nominees to act as atemporary base station for a period of time within its zone.We study the characteristics and performance of theWEAC protocol by means of simulation. It is shown thatthe WEAC protocol scales well to large networks ofmobile stations, and it outperform other routing protocolsin terms of stability, load balancing and energy savingamongst the network. The WEAC protocol would facilitatethe development of a comprehensive and promisingframework for Quality of Service (QoS) management inwireless mobile ad hoc networks once the properintegration of the MAC protocol with the routing and calladmission control mechanisms is established. At that time,it would lay the groundwork for assigning bandwidth,and/or implementing priorities, and hence for QoS-basedrouting by conveying the quality of a path prior to callsetup.
