Abstract

This paper proposes the mobility-dependent resourcereservation (MDRR) based admission control (AC) to providethe flexible usage of limited resource in wireless multimedianetworks. The area of a cell is divided into the non-reservation,pre-handoff, and handoff zones. As mobile stations move intothe pre-handoff zone and is leaving the serving base station, bandwidth is reserved in the target/sub-target cell. The amountof bandwidth to be reserved is dynamically adjusted to reflectthe current mobility condition of mobile stations.Performance of the proposed scheme is investigated throughOPNET simulation using the 7-cell cellular network wheremobile stations with random mobility and variable velocity areassumed. The results show that the proposed MDRR schemecan provide small connection dropping probability and achievebetter bandwidth utilization when appropriate parameters arechosen. The fixed bandwidth reservation (FBR) scheme iscompared with the MDRR scheme with non-preemption andpreemption services.
