Abstract: This paper investigates the performance of a handoff scheme with guard channels in ATM-based mobile networks. Guard channels are dynamically reserved depending on the number of mobile stations in the cells. For analysis, we determine the blocking probabilities for new calls and handoff calls using the Markov chain. Numerical results show that guard channel reservations can be effective to obtain lower handoff blocking probability. However, the number of guard channels must be carefully chosen not to affect too adversely the new call blocking probability.
