Abstract

The paper presents a methodology to design and todevelop personalizable educational content to be used bylearning communities on the Web.As the cost of designand creation of educational materials for web-basedcourses is normally expensive and time consuming, thereis an obvious advantage in exchanging course materialbetween educators involved in the same field. To this endwe are claiming that other than the adoption of re-usemethodologies, a valuable saving is obtained by realizingcontent that best fits the actual needs of different studentsengaged in diverse learning scenarios.A methodologythat couples re-use techniques with personalizationmethods is discussed and a layered modelling process isproposed.A system based on this model is considered, and some of its peculiar implementation aspects arehighlighted. In particular, focus is placed on the benefitsof using XML technology as a straighforward solution toour modelling requirements.
