Abstract

The current Internet provides a single class best-effortservice. However, the continuos data traffic (e.g., audioand video) of new applications that are emerging overthe Internet have different characteristics if compared toconventional data traffic (e.g., text and images) andconsequently have different QoS (Quality of Service)requirements. Several approaches have been developedtrying to guarantee QoS. The development ofapplications that have the capability to adapt theirbehavior, depending on the network performance, is oneexample of such approaches. Inside this context, thispaper introduces the development of ApplicationProgramming Interface (API) to incorporate QoS inmultimedia applications. This API has QoS monitoringfunctions through RTCP (Real Time Control Protocol)packets and QoS adaptation functions through theapplication of adaptation policies.
