Abstract

The point-to-multipoint ABR service in ATM networksis important for many data applications. ResourceManagement (RM) cells are used by receivers to returnback to the source an explicit rate indicating theirbandwidth fair share on the bottleneck of the pathleading to them. Switches in the multicast treeconsolidate the information in backward RM cellsreceived from downstream switches or receivers andforward this consolidated information to their upstreamswitch. A number of algorithms have been developed forextending ABR congestion avoidance algorithms toperform feedback consolidation at the branch points. Ademonstration of the performance of the proposedalgorithm compared with some other algorithms througha set of numerical examples is presented. We used theATM/HFC network simulator version 4.1, releasedDecember 1998 by the American National Institute forStandards and Technology NIST. The simulator code ismodified to make the algorithm.
