In order to perform effective routing protocol test, thepassive testing is introduced. The passive testing checksthe protocol implementation through online observation. Itcan be performed in production field without interfering tothe network and possesses quite a lot other beneficialfeatures. This test method was realized in an OnLine TestSystem (OLTS). Key techniques were worked out and theframework was designed. The OLTS exploits the statesynchronization algorithm to test the protocol statemachine. It tests the exchange and the manipulation of therouting information through the topology analysis and theinternal process simulation. OLTS supports multipleinstances to work in a distributed environment. It can alsocooperate with an active test system to bring out the bestin each other. Now the prototype of the OLTS has beenimplemented. The test activity on BGP, OSPF and RIP hasbeen performed
