A conceptual framework is given for software designed as an integrated whole for a distributed system or local area network. The ISO reference model for open systems interconnection is incorporated into the design approach. A summary of mechanisms provided in systems and languages for inter-process communication is given and each mechanism is evaluated in the context of support for distributed software. A classification of typical inter-process interactions is given as a further basis for comparison.
