This paper describes a system level design approachto power awareness in the wearable computers project atCarnegie Mellon University. The paper identifies themajor components of power consumption in a mobilecomputer, evaluates their respective contributions topower consumption, and analyzes various techniques forimproving their energy efficiency. The paper describesour research framework and experimental evaluationsof techniques for improving energy efficiency of asystem, ranging from the communication level down tothe physical level of the battery. The work describedincludes techniques for dynamically varying the CPUclock frequency.
