A method for reducing blocking artifacts in compressed images coded by the block discrete cosine transform (BDCT) is presented. Problems arising from the independent transfrom and quantization of individual blocks result in blocking artifacts. This study is aimed at reducing the blocking artifacts while avoiding excessively blurring the underlying image. The theory of projection onto convex sets (POCS) is applied. An image before compression is simulated by a locally adaptive triangualr mesh. The forms the basis of a smoothness constraint set. To construct such a mesh, each image block is divided into a set of triangles. The number of triangles in a perimental results show that the proposed method outperforms two competing methods.
