Abstract

This paper considers an optimisation method of multi-tuned-mass-damper (MTMD) using genetic algorithms (GAs). By using the procedure developed in this paper, it is not necessary for the building model is not necessary to be transformed into a single mode model as usually done in the available research so far. Two performance indices are considered in this paper, i.e., H2 and H∞ transfer functions from the external disturbances to the response that will be kept small. As compared to single tuned-mass-damper (TMD) systems, MTMD systems are more robust in the sense that the overall effectiveness of the system may not be seriously degraded if one or more dampers fail to function as shown in the numerical example below.
