Abstract

A tool for visualizing the behavior of parallel Fortran programs is described. PF-View builds on the functionality already provided by IBM''s Parallel Fortran Trace Facility, extending its usefulness by postprocessing the textual trace information to derive a graphical framework on which program behavior is animated. Its design capitalizes on formal and informal studies of how programmers go about parallelizing scientific applications, providing an intuitive representation of program execution. Detailed information on lock/event synchronization and performance analysis, while quickly available through additional windows, is hidden from the casual user to maximize ease and simplicity. Most importantly, the program as the user knows it--in the form of hierarchiacally-organized source code--is constantly available and automatically correlated with the animation to underscore visually the relationship between source statements and run-time actions.
