Abstract

This paper deals with the analysis of job completion time and performability measures in degradable/repairable fault-tolerant computer systems. These systems change their performance (e.g., mode of operation or service rate) in response to different events such as failure or repair. We allow different types of service-preemption interactions due to changes in the system operation. When all service preemptions are of the preemptive-resume type then the completion time of a given job and the accumulated service (or reward) until a given time are dual measures. In this case we derive and relate different performance and reliability measures that have been proposed for the analysis of fault-tolerant computer systems. Numerical methods are employed to evaluate these measures and examples are used to demonstrate the use of the techniques developed.
