Abstract

Although workflow management has established itself as an important area of research, little consensus has been reached as to what should be essential ingredients of a workflow specification language. As a result, the market is flooded with workflow management systems, based on different paradigms and using a large variety of concepts. It is not the intention of this paper to propose yet another workflow modelling language, rather, it seeks to formally define a collection of widely used workflow modelling concepts and to use their definition in an investigation of the deadlock properties of a number of commercially supported workflow modelling languages.
