In this paper, we propose a novel protocol forwireless mobile ad hoc networks, which establishes adynamic wireless mobile infrastructure. The proposedprotocol, namely, the Power-Aware Virtual BaseStations (PA-VBS)protocol, mimics and maintainsthe operation of the conventional fixed infrastructurein cellular networks. In the PA-VBS protocol, amobile node is elected from a set of nominees to act asa temporary base station within its zone based on itsnormalized power value.Likewise, we study thecharacteristics and performance of PA-VBS by meansof simulation. It is shown that PA-VBS scales well tolarge networks of mobile stations, and that itoutperforms other infrastructure-formation protocolsin terms of load balancing.
