This paper proposes an extension to the standard Sub-net Bandwidth Manager (SBM).The extension controls thebest effort traffic on the subnet to minimize its impact onthe QoS of the RSVP flows. The extension is achieved byadding extra messages to the standard RSVP that enablesthe SBM to signal the hosts about the available bandwidth. The hosts then control the rate of best effort traffic accord-ingly to avoid excessive collisions on the subnet. The imple-mentation of the proposed extension on a shared EthernetLAN demonstrates the benefits of this extension.
