STREAMS-based protocol stacks have become inte-gral components of many desktop operating systems. In this paper, we explore the UNIX STREAMS archi-tecture inproviding priority to networked applicationsat the end system. We modified the underlying net-work device driver (a STREAMS-based Ethernet de-vice driver) to enable demultiplexing of packets base don their priorities. We explored the benefits of our ap-proach by conducting several performance tests.Usingthe modifed Ethernet driver combined with the prior-ity STREAMS offers, our test results yield a 550%improvement over the traditional approach where nopriority is used inpacket delivery to end user applica-tions.
