Abstract

We investigate how to add rate control to full-duplexIEEE 802.3 Ethernet. We e vision the need for ratecontrol in order to enable bandwidth allocation i futureEthernet in the First Mile (EFM)subscriber services. Wepropose a RATE mechanism that ca be implementedwith a simple byte-based leaky bucket. We demonstratewith simulation methods that RATE can isolate flows andprovide lower loss and delay than no control or PAUSEcontrol for misbehaving flows. We also show, usingsimulation models, that RATE and PAUSE cancomplement each other where a switch is RATEcontrolled and the sending source PAUSE controlled. Aappendix gives a formal specification of RATE.
