Abstract

What is network denial of service (DoS), and why is itsuch a problem? This research project has sought toinvestigate these questions and look at the deeperquestions such as can denial of service be removed, can itbe detected and can network systems adequately respondto denial of service incidents should they becomesubjected to them? This paper describes some issues that make networkdenial of service a difficult security problem, anddiscusses some solutions that have been provided by thesecurity research community. The paper then provides aclassification of denial of service, the Consumer problemand the Producer problem, which forms the bulk ofmodern network denial of service incidents. Finally thepaper proposes requirements for a framework for themanagement of response to network denial of serviceincidents, and suggests future directions that are beingdeveloped to create the framework.
